“Mama was his first word, Dada, then ‘tar’ — which is guitar, and Bubba, which is the dog. And now he blows kisses at the ladies in the supermarket. He’s a big flirt. Big blue eyes, big white blond head of hair. He’s very handsome.”

What’s Vanessa Williams‘ favorite mother-daughter activity?

Posing in the May issue of Essence with her girls — Jillian, 20, Sasha, 10, and Melanie, 22 — Williams says horseback riding with her daughters is close to her heart, as well as traveling with her own mother, Helen.

The Ugly Betty star, 47, who credits “doors that were opened by the women who came before” for the opportunities her daughters have today, tells the magazine that she looked back to her mom for inspiration while portraying editor-in-chief Wilhelmina Slater on the recently canceled show.

“My mother considers it a compliment,” Williams insists, saying mama Helen encouraged her to “dare to be different.”

Jillian and Melanie are Williams’ daughters with Ramon Hervey II, with whom she also has son Devin, 17, while Sasha is her daughter with Rick Fox.

The duo caught DanceBrazil’s final performance at The Joyce Theater before grabbing a meal at The City Bakery and heading back to their apartment.

Suri, who turns 4 this month, and Holmes are currently in the Big Apple while the actress films Son of No One with Al Pacino and Channing Tatum.

“Mother, father and son are all doing well,” says Thicke’s rep.

Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody is expecting a baby, she confirms via Twitter.

“Thanks for the congrats on my fetus,” Cody, 31, writes. “No secrets here; just thought it would be fun to see how big I could get before someone noticed.”

The will be the first child for Cody and her husband.

Born Brook Busey, Cody created the Showtime series United States of Tara, writes a column for Entertainment Weekly and is currently adapting the Sweet Valley High book series into a film.

Bryce Dallas Howard carries son Theodore ‘Theo’ Norman – along with his Easter basket — after leaving a holiday party at Ron Meyer’s home on Sunday afternoon.

“The first two years before my son started preschool I didn’t work much because it was like, ‘How are we going to juggle it?’” the actress, 29, said recently.

“Now that he’s in preschool, working outside of L.A. is like this whole other thing because I can’t be away from him for more than a few days. It’s a constant question, but like with any working mother, it’s something that you figure out.”

Theo, 3, is the only child for Howard and husband Seth Gabel.

The couple, who wed in Nov. 2006, are also parents to daughter Ella Sofia, 2 ½.

Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath and fiancée Carin Kingsland are expecting twins — a boy and a girl — conceived via IVF in May, they tell PEOPLE exclusively.

“I’m so excited,” says McGrath. “My DNA paranoia is kicking in: I’ve got to feed these children. We’ve got to get the nursery together. And what do you do when you bring the kids home?”

“Most parents are like, ‘Oh, the wonders of child rearing,’” he says with an exaggerated sigh. “But we’re freaking out! The first year is going to be gnarly.”

All joking aside, McGrath, 42, says, “I love them already, but I need them to come out so I can really shower them with love. I can’t wait to meet them.”
